AG Brown encourages Washingtonians to dispose of unused medications
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 24. Attorney General Nick Brown encourages Washingtonians to safely dispose of unneeded medications to prevent drug misuse and abuse.
Dozens of local law enforcement agencies around Washington will accept old, unwanted, or expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Drop-off locations can be found online at https://deatakeback.com.
“Leaving around old prescriptions you don’t need can easily lead to someone else misusing them, particularly young people,” Brown said. “Safe disposal through National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a great way to remove that temptation.”
For 16 years, DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has helped Americans safely and anonymously dispose of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or expired—to prevent drug misuse and abuse. In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 20.4 million pounds (10,200 tons) of medication from circulation since its inception.
Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, and illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. The cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
Year-round drug disposal sites can be found via the Washington State Department of Health or the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
