Remote Area Medical Event Brings Estimated $160,000 in Free Health Care Services to Mount Morris

The Remote Area Medical (RAM) event was an extraordinary example of what can happen when a community comes together to respond to an identified healthcare need. The event provided 289 community members with free dental and vision services, generating an estimated $160,000 in healthcare services at no cost to patients.

The initiative grew from community-driven efforts following the loss of Mosaic Dental, Livingston County’s only Medicaid dental provider. Its closure created a significant gap in access to care, particularly for residents who were uninsured, underinsured, covered by Medicaid, or otherwise unable to obtain needed dental services. The RAM event helped ensure that individuals who might otherwise have delayed care or been turned away were able to receive essential services with dignity and without financial barriers.

This effort was championed by the Department of Health’s Community Health Director, Margaret Bettete, whose leadership in conjunction with our newly formed dental coalition helped bring partners together and turn an identified community need into meaningful action. The event was hosted at Mount Morris School, with the generous support and partnership of Superintendent Greg Bump and the school district and the Seventh District Dental Society.

Most importantly, this event demonstrated the strength and spirit of our community. It was not simply a healthcare event—it was a collaborative response to a real access-to-care challenge. Through the commitment of community leaders, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and local partners, 289 people received care they may not otherwise have been able to access.

With $160,000 in healthcare value delivered directly back to the community, the Livingston County RAM event illustrates the tremendous impact that community-driven partnerships can have in addressing rural healthcare disparities and ensuring that our most vulnerable residents are not left without care.
